Veteran Nollywood actor Pete Edochie has once again reminded everyone that he knows exactly where he believes he stands in the Nigerian movie industry.

The legendary actor recently stirred conversation after declaring that he does not have a favourite actor because, in his own view, he is not in the same league as his colleagues.

Edochie made the statement while appearing on comedian Isbae U’s online show, Curiosity Made Me Ask, in a newly released episode.

During the interview, the veteran actor was asked a rather simple question: Who is his favourite actor?

But instead of mentioning one of the many respected names in Nollywood, Pete Edochie gave an answer that has now got people talking.

The actor reportedly explained that he could not pick a favourite because he considers himself bigger than the other actors.

That statement alone is enough to get social media talking, especially in an industry where actors’ seniority, achievements and years of experience have always been subjects of debate.

And knowing how social media works, you can already imagine the reactions.

Pete Edochie throws the challenge open

The conversation did not end with the question about his favourite actor.

Edochie was also asked about people who have claimed to be older than him in the Nigerian acting industry.

The veteran actor said he has seen people making such claims but has never felt the need to respond to them.

“People have been writing that they are older than me in the industry, but I don’t respond,” he said.

He was then asked what he would say to people who believe they are on the same level with him.

This time, Pete Edochie did not appear interested in playing safe.

“Whoever said they are of the same level with me should come out and say it,” he said.

And honestly, that is the kind of statement that can easily turn a quiet Nollywood conversation into a full-blown social media debate.

Pete Edochie has spent several decades building his reputation, and he clearly believes his contribution to Nollywood puts him in a class of his own.

The Yemi Solade angle

Interestingly, Edochie’s comments come at a time when an old debate about seniority in the industry has resurfaced.

Actor Yemi Solade has previously claimed that although Pete Edochie is older than him, he started acting before the veteran actor.

Solade reportedly described Edochie as a senior colleague while maintaining that his own acting career began earlier.

The issue resurfaced when Solade also appeared on Curiosity Made Me Ask and maintained that he started acting before Edochie.

However, Pete Edochie did not mention Yemi Solade by name during his latest appearance.

Instead, he spoke generally about people who have claimed seniority over him or those who believe they belong to the same level as him.

That distinction is important because, at least from the comments available, Edochie did not directly call out Solade.

Still, given the history of the conversation, it is understandable why some people may connect the two issues.

“I don’t know the definition of people’s legend”

The veteran actor was also asked about being described as a legend.

Rather than getting carried away by the title, Edochie admitted that he does not really know what people mean when they call him a legend.

“I don’t know the definition of people’s legend, but I’m glad to be celebrated,” he said.

For me, that part of the interview is just as interesting as his “same league” comment.

Whether someone chooses to call him a legend, veteran, icon or simply an experienced actor, there is no denying that Pete Edochie has been one of the most recognisable faces in Nigerian entertainment for decades.

His name is not new to Nollywood, and neither is his influence.

Pete Edochie’s life before acting

Another interesting detail from the interview was Edochie’s revelation about his professional life before acting.

The actor explained that he was already established professionally before he ventured into acting.

He eventually retired as a Director of Programmes, showing that his career history goes beyond what many people know him for on screen.

That is perhaps one reason his confidence when discussing his career should not come as a complete surprise.

Pete Edochie did not simply appear in Nollywood yesterday. His career has stretched across several decades, during which he has featured in numerous films and television productions and established himself as one of the industry’s most recognisable personalities.

For many Nigerians, especially those who grew up watching Nollywood in its earlier years, Pete Edochie is more than just another actor.

He is one of those names that immediately brings a certain image to mind.

And whether you agree with his claim that he is in a different league or not, it is difficult to discuss the history of Nollywood without mentioning the veteran.

But is Pete Edochie really in a league of his own?

Now, this is where the argument gets interesting.

Every generation has its stars. There are actors who have become household names because of their talent, longevity, memorable characters and contribution to the growth of the industry.

Pete Edochie certainly belongs in that conversation.

But saying he is not in the same league as other actors is bound to divide opinion.

Some fans will see it as confidence from a man who has earned his place over many years. Others may see it as an unnecessarily bold comparison in an industry filled with talented actors who have also built impressive careers.

Either way, Pete Edochie has done what very few celebrities can do effortlessly: he has got people talking.

And judging by the reaction already building around his comments, this particular statement is unlikely to disappear from social media anytime soon.

What do you think? Is Pete Edochie genuinely in a league of his own, or should he give other Nollywood veterans their flowers too?
